Leading SDOC Forward: A transparent path to our next Superintendent
As Chair of the Oconee County School Board, I want to offer our community a clear understanding of the process currently underway as we navigate a transition in district leadership. The role of Superintendent is one of the most critical positions in public education, serving not only as the chief executive officer of our district but also as a visionary leader responsible for shaping the educational future of our 10,000 students.
Over the last couple of weeks, the Board has been intentional and thoughtful in responding to this moment of change. Transitions of this magnitude must be handled with care and precision, and we are committed to getting this right. This will be a slow, methodical process—because our students, teachers and families deserve nothing less than the very best leader to move us forward.
Step One: Acting Superintendent
The first step in our process was the selection of an Acting Superintendent. This role serves as a temporary, short-term leader whose main responsibility is to keep the district running smoothly and provide continuity while the Board develops a more comprehensive plan. The Acting Superintendent is a current leader within the district—someone familiar with our people, policies and priorities. This ensures that day-to-day operations remain stable and that the needs of students, families and staff continue to be met without disruption.
Step Two: Interim Superintendent
The next phase will be the appointment of an Interim Superintendent. This individual will serve for a longer but still temporary period, perhaps six to twelve months, and is brought in to provide strategic leadership during the transition. Unlike the Acting role, the Interim Superintendent is typically selected from outside the district and brings with them broad experience in educational leadership, school improvement and district management. Their mission is twofold: to maintain stability and to begin setting the foundation for the next permanent leader. They often help heal divisions, rebuild trust and offer a fresh perspective—all while preparing the district for a successful, long-term transition.
Step Three: Superintendent Search
Finally, the Board will launch a comprehensive Superintendent search process where our community will play a vital role. We will be intentional in seeking the voices of stakeholders to help us in this stage. We will work closely with a consultant to guide us through the process of recruiting, screening and vetting candidates.
We are not rushing. We are building. And that takes time. The goal is not just to find a manager but to identify a transformational leader who can take our district to the next level. We are looking for someone who values innovation in education, builds a strong, supportive culture for our teachers and puts student outcomes at the heart of every decision. Our next Superintendent must understand the unique needs of Oconee County, while bringing forward-thinking ideas that help every student thrive in a rapidly changing world.
A Community Responsibility
This is not just a Board decision—it’s a community investment. Our next leader must be someone who reflects the hopes and values of Oconee County, and we take the responsibility seriously of selecting someone who will lead with both vision and integrity.
We will keep the public informed every step of the way. Transparency, accountability and student-focused decision-making will continue to guide our actions. While this process may take time, we believe the end result will be a leader who unites, inspires and boldly leads SDOC into the future.
Together, we have an opportunity to shape the future of our district for years to come and we’re committed to doing just that.
